President Ramaphosa participates at the Global Citizen Scaling up renewables in Africa campaign

At a pledging event on the eve of the G20 summit in Johannesburg during South Africa's presidency, leaders including President Cyril Ramaphosa, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans marked the culmination of the 'Scaling Up Renewables in Africa' campaign, launched a year prior to combat energy poverty affecting 600 million Africans despite abundant solar, wind, and hydro resources. Governments, multilateral banks like the EIB and African Development Bank, and private firms such as Octopus Energy and Sun King announced commitments totaling 15.5 billion euros, poised to deliver nearly 27 gigawatts of clean power to 17.5 million households. This global solidarity advances Africa's just energy transition, fostering economic growth, jobs, and improved access to education and healthcare, with emphasis on swift implementation for tangible impact.
