President Ramaphosa participates at the Global Citizen Scaling up renewables in Africa campaign

At a high-profile event in Johannesburg on the eve of the G20 summit during South Africa's presidency, leaders including President Cyril Ramaphosa, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans marked the culmination of the year-long Scaling Up Renewables in Africa campaign. Despite Africa's abundant solar, wind, and hydro resources, 600 million people lack electricity access, prompting pledges from governments, multilateral banks, and private firms totaling 15.5 billion euros to deliver nearly 27 gigawatts of clean power to 17.5 million households. These commitments, including Team Europe's new 7 billion euro pledge and private sector investments like Genesis Energy's 10 gigawatts, underscore a push for economic growth, job creation, and just energy transitions across the continent.
