Calls for Urgent World Trade Organization Reform and Sustainable Financing as SA Steers G20 Agenda

Executive Summary

South Africa’s G20 Presidency has received the Think20 (T20) 2025 Communiqué, a set of policy recommendations urging urgent reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and a fundamental overhaul of the global financing system to address inequality and support poorest economies. Key proposals include accelerated WTO modernization for fairer trade rules, enhanced digital infrastructure to close data gaps, restructuring of IMF governance and multilateral development banks for better debt relief and concessional finance, alongside stronger action on SDGs, food security, gender equality, and climate transitions. Presented to Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, these evidence-based inputs from five T20 task forces will shape outcomes at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg on November 22-23, under the theme of solidarity, equality, and sustainability.
